Drawing Tips and Tricks: How to Achieve Depth and Dimension in Your Art

Are you tired of your art looking flat and one-dimensional? Want to add some depth and dimension to your drawings? Well, you've come to the right place! In this blog post, I'll be sharing my top tips and tricks for achieving depth and dimension in your art.

  1. Use Heavier Shading

One of the easiest ways and my favourite way to add depth is to really layer on the shading in the naturally darkest areas of your artwork. For example the areas that would naturally have less light on their surface, like the inner parts of a flower petal or the foliage directly behind a flower head. Experiment with shading and hatching techniques over the top of your artwork to see what works best for you.

  2. Add a darker Background
Use a dark toned background for your artwork to sit on top of. This helps to lift everything so it pops. I love dark green backgrounds for floral pieces the most!

  3. Overlap Your Objects

Overlapping whole objects is another great way to create depth in your art. By overlapping objects, you're giving the viewer a sense of which objects are closer to them and which ones are farther away. This is a simple yet effective technique that can make a huge difference in the overall look of your drawing. Try adding some shading behind your most forefront objects also. I don’t use this technique too much but it works really well to add even more depth.

  4. Use More Colour Tones To Create Perspective

This technique basically involves using colour and value to create the illusion of depth in your art. Try colouring objects that are farther in tones that are darker and cooler, while objects that are closer can uses tones that are lighter and warmer in colour.

  5. Add Texture

Texture can also be a great way to add depth and dimension to your art. By adding texture, you're giving your drawings more visual interest and making them look more realistic. I love mixing media to add texture or drawing on a heavily textured surface such as hand made paper.

By using these tips and tricks, you'll be well on your way to creating art that has more depth and life to it! Don't be afraid to experiment and try new techniques – that's always the best way to grow and improve upon your work.

Happy creating!
