Over the past 6 or so years I have had a constant battle with my skin, it is extremely oily in the T-zone area and my chin and jaw line is constantly graced by the presence of acne. Some days I feel like I have it under slight control and it can be quite calm, others it just flares up out of nowhere and theres nothing I can do to hide it.
If anyone reading this is unfortunately suffering from adult acne also, you’ll know it’s not just the physical appearance of the condition that is unbearable but its also the burning and the pain, not to mention the embarrassment.
Over the years i’ve been trying to put together a full skincare routine that works for my difficult skin type. As my skin is obviously very sensitive it can be hard to find products that don’t aggravate the problem but i feel like i’ve finally found a routine that is doing a pretty good job of keeping things under control.
Over the years I have tried a mixture of prescribed antibiotics and topical treatments, at the minute i’m not using any but I hope to be referred back to a dermatologist very soon to get rid of the acne once and for all.
I’m by no means an expert and everyones skin is different but I just wanted to share what products are helping me keep my skin somewhat under control, so hopefully you’ll find something new that helps you.
I use this first thing every morning, the grapefruit scent makes my skin feel totally reenergised and awake. The main ingredient of glycolic acid works wonders for reducing acne scaring, which I have a lot of. This works by stimulating the production of collagen in the skin and by deeply exfoliating to even out the tops and bottoms of scaring.
The cleanser leaves my skin feeling so soft, fresh and deeply clean.
This exfoliator is gentle and effective enough to use every day, i generally use it every other day though. Depending on how dull and dry my skin is looking.
This is like a chemical peel in a tube, so i’ve heard. It is definitely working wonders for my skin, it has never been so soft!
The extra glycolic acid works well to reduce the redness of my acne aswell as the scaring it also helps to remove any dry skin around the area. The salicylic acid cleanses my pores and reduces them in size.
Night Time Routine
I generally switch between this cleanser and the Nip + Fab cleanser at night time. I discovered this cleanser a few years back, whilst in the USA shopping in Target and totally loved it. After my first bottle ran out I had to wait until I was back in the States to restock as it wasn’t available in the UK. Thankfully it is now available online.
So at the end of the day I firstly remove the majority of my makeup with a fragrance free baby wipe or with some micellar water like this one and a cotton ball. I then go in with the Cerave Foaming Facial Cleanser to make sure it is fully removed.
The cleanser is for normal to oily skin and does a great job of drawing the oil out of my skin for the majority of the night. The hyaluronic acid in there also helps to keep it hydrated by holding water in the top layer of skin, making the skin look younger and healthier.
The cleanser also contains ceramides, which are naturally occuring fats in the skin that help repair the skin barrier. Acne prone skin tends to have fewer ceramides so topping them can be beneficial.
This stuff is a miracle in a bottle! I was recommended it, along with the next product I use by a Kiehls skin care specialist during a consultation in New York.
I rub a couple of drops of the oil into my hands and pat into my face and neck, whatever is left over on my hands I rub into the ends of my hair and into my cuticles. It’s great for keeping everything soft and shiny in general.
I’m not sure how this stuff works, i just know that when I use it I wake up with super soft and radiant skin. Some might think that using an oil on oily skin is counter productive but actually it helps keep the oil production in my face under control. This works by stopping the skin thinking it needs to produce excess oil.
The concentrate is paraben free and also contains evening primrose oil, an omega 6 fatty acid that helps to regulate hormones. Theres no doubt my adult acne is hormonal so I also take evening primrose oil in a capsule form to try and combat the issue from the inside.
I always make sure to apply the concentrate underneath my moisturiser so it is fully absorbed into the skin.
At first I wasn’t sure this moisturiser was doing my skin any good but throughout trialing my skin care routine, adding and removing products to see what was working and what wasn’t I definitely found that my skin was breaking out more when I wasn’t using it.
It has great anti ageing and hydrating properties, early 20’s is a great time to add anti ageing into your routine. It also contains Vitamin E, which is pretty much essential to keep acne at bay. Vitamin E helps to prevent sebum oxidation which is what blocks your pores up.
There are two versions of this moisturiser, make sure to purchase the lightweight version if you have oily skin, it has more of a water like texture when applied to the skin and blends straight in.
I mainly use this at night as sometimes it can be a bit heavy before applying makeup in a rush without allowing it to dry into the skin properly. The lavender oil in there is also super relaxing just before bed.
Lastly I dab a small amount of Eye Alert under each eye, never rub it in. It has a cooling effect and the caffeine and vitamins help to fight fatigue and the appearance of dark circles.
Do let me know if you use any of these products and how they work for you, in the comments below.
