a natural electrical phenomenon characterized by the appearance of streamers of reddish or greenish light in the sky, especially near the northern or southern magnetic pole. The effect is caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with atoms in the upper atmosphere. In northern and southern regions it is respectively called aurora borealis or Northern Lights and aurora australis or Southern Lights.

Over on Instagram a few weeks ago, I challenged myself to create a new illustration with a 9 hour deadline. In those few short hours my newest piece Aurora was born!

The zebra, lamps and small mandala were all drawn, shaded and coloured with marker pens in that time. Whilst polishing up the image in photoshop after scanning I did add a previously drawn mandala and some watercolour textures to finish it off. So all in all the full piece probably took around 11 hours, not bad. It’s not as detailed as i’d usually go, but with the time taken, i’m quite pleased with it.

You may be wondering, why did I set myself such a short deadline? Well the reason is, I had been putting off creating a new piece for a while and this was my way of kickstarting my brain into putting pen to paper as I really do work better under pressure. Adding more colour to my work is something i’ve been experimenting more with lately too, so with having a deadline I was forced into thinking of new ways to add colour to my usual comfort zone of monochrome.

The idea behind this piece was another one that just popped into my mind as I started drawing. I have been watching a lot of programmes and YouTube videos about space at the minute too, so I think thats where the partial inspiration was drawn from. The lamps I guess, add an urban twist which probably comes with living in the city now. The combination of bright colours, lights and the way the watercolours have merged together, inspired the name Aurora.

I’d love to know what you think, let me know using the contact form in the menu bar or get in touch on Instagram!

Filigree Patterns

Felicity & Ink | Filigree Patterns
filigree | fɪlɪɡri
ornamental work of fine (typically gold or silver) wire formed into delicate tracery.

Is it just me that these short days and dark nights are making feel like winter shall never end? Fear not, spring is just around the corner and to celebrate I have a new pattern collection, ‘Filigree’.

I’ve had these sat in my library a little while now but if you follow me on Instagram you’ll know I went on a little throwback to warmer weather posting spree today and it reminded me of these.

I have plans to use these patterns on various things but for now enjoy the patterns on their own.

Flamingo & Sloth | Illustration

Felicity & Ink | Flamingo & Sloth Illustration

I was feeling inspired to create something colourful and bright after being stuck in a black and white rutt again. With winter looming, i felt a tropical, mandala inspired piece was fitting.

I started off with the intention of solely drawing a colourful mandala but the flamingo and sloth just popped up out of nowhere. Once the idea stuck in my mind, i had to sketch it out. The result is pretty cute right?!

I also love to add specks of gold foil to a finished piece to add extra intricate details.
